Twenty years ago, catchment area and water resources studies concentrated on upland catchments, where the water was almost inevitably considered as 'pure'; now, the value of a resource is known to depend largely upon the quality of that resource, so that a substantial chapter of Ward and Robinson is dedicated to water quality.
The material in Principles of Hydrology is arranged in a logical progression through the hydrological cycle, from precipitation, through interception which would hardly have been mentioned twenty years ago to evaporation, of which transpiration of vegetation is a component part happily the authors appear to endorse the late Dr Penman's abhorrence of the term evapotranspiration , soil water, groundwater and runoff, as well as the discussion of water quality to which reference was made earlier.
